This Week in Music History: Bob Marley and the Power of Unity

This week in music history takes us back to December 3, 1976, one of the most pivotal moments in reggae history. During a rehearsal for the Smile Jamaica Unity Concert, two gunmen entered 56 Hope Road in Kingston in an attempt to stop the event amid intense political tension.

Bob Marley, Rita Marley, manager Don Taylor, and band assistant Louis Griffiths were all shot during the attack. Miraculously, everyone survived. Just two days later, Bob Marley still took the stage and performed — delivering one of the most iconic moments in music history, using his voice and presence to call for peace and unity during one of Jamaica’s most volatile periods.

It remains a powerful reminder of the role music plays in bringing people together, even in the hardest times.
